Digital Security Training For Human Rights Defenders:Building Resilience and Advocacy in Challenging Contexts
In the picturesque city of Mbale, Uganda, a two-day capacity building workshop for Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) was held with the aim of enhancing their understanding of Human Rights, fostering resiliency, and equipping them with effective advocacy tools in the face of challenging circumstances. The event, organized by a coalition of local and international human rights organizations and facilitated by The Human Rights Centre Uganda, emphasized the importance of physical and organizational safety, while also delving into the critical aspect of digital safety and security in today’s digital age.
The workshop commenced by revisiting the foundation of Human Rights, recognizing their universality, inalienability, and indivisibility. Participants engaged in open discussions to understand the diverse and complex human rights challenges faced by various communities in Uganda and beyond. This comprehensive understanding allowed HRDs to better identify, address, and advocate for the rights of marginalized groups, empowering them to create positive change within their communities.
For HRDs, resilience is a crucial aspect of their work, given the often dangerous and hostile environments they operate in. The workshop prioritized discussions on physical safety, exploring risk management strategies, and self-defense techniques that could prove invaluable in high-risk situations. By empowering participants with practical skills, they gained the confidence needed to continue their advocacy work with courage and determination.
